Syster och Bror Bygga IKEA (Sister and Brother Build IKEA) is a 60-minute production that highlights the dilemmas the sandwich generation faces in caring for older parents while raising their family.

Dad has suffered a stroke and must go into seniors’ care. Brother (Rick Kiebiech) and Sister (Janice Thompson Spence), who have not spoken in years, are trying to assemble a set of IKEA drawers at their father’s new lodgings before he arrives.

They are opposite personalities and blame each other for lack of contact. He is a chief financial officer at a tech company and loves to flash a platinum credit card. She holds down menial jobs and is a do-it-your-selfer.

He is a control freak who enjoys eating diverse ethnic food. She lives for sarcasm and prefers a plain hamburger. He hides her wallet. She snaps his suspenders. Both have spent their life upping each other in various ways.

Their sibling rivalry has reached volatile proportions largely from their contrasting lifestyles. But it’s only after the duo starts being honest with each other and share feelings, memories, and losses, that they cross a divide that kept them apart for years.
