Former MCHS student wins $15,000 scholarship

A recent Morinville Community High School (MCHS) graduate is $15,000 richer after winning one of the University of Alberta’s top scholarships.

Chelsea Robinson was one of 16 students from across Canada to earn a Chancellor’s Citation Scholarship worth $15,000 over four years. Robinson will use the scholarship to study at the faculty of science at the University of Alberta, where she is presently a student.

When she first received the notice of her award in the mail, Robinson said she mistook it for a rejection letter.

“I wasn’t actually even planning on sending it in because I didn’t think I would get it because it was a bigger scholarship,” she told the Gazette last week.

“When I got it, I was so excited.”

In her application, Robinson was asked to describe herself and discuss her future goals, which include graduating from medical school and working abroad.

“I want to go abroad and do Doctors without Borders for awhile and then come back to Canada and work in a clinic,” said Robinson of the humanitarian organization. She said that starting university has been a big change but so far, the experience has been enjoyable.

Her desire to work abroad is fuelled by an interest in different cultures.

“It has a lot to do with being able to see different cultures and see different situations. What’s really important to me is it just helps you to appreciate what we have in Canada. We’re so gifted to live here and to have all the things that we do,” said Robinson, adding that she wants to give back to those in need.

When she’s not hitting the books, Robinson keeps busy by figure skating and painting.

Robinson attended MCHS for four years and graduated with a 98 per cent average.

“It was really great,” she said of her time there.

“It was a small school so you get to know everybody.”
