The Morinville RCMP have confirmed that one driver travelling in the wrong lanes caused a car crash that killed two people Tuesday.
The crash took place about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon just north of Morinville on Highway 2.
A 90-year-old man was driving a Red Dodge Caliber northbound in the southbound lanes of the four-lane highway, when he collided with the other vehicle.
The other vehicle was a grey Volvo, with a 53-year-old St. Albert man behind the wheel, which was driving in the southbound lanes.
Both drivers were travelling alone and died on the scene after the head-on collision.
Morinville RCMP Staff Sgt. Mac Richards said accident investigators have concluded the Caliber was the vehicle travelling in the wrong direction, but what caused him to be there will be near impossible to determine.
“I don’t think we will ever determine how or why he was in that wrong set of lanes,” he said. “Unfortunately I don’t think we will get that answer.”
The southbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours Tuesday as a result of the accident. The names of the two men were not being released.
