Suspects made off with petty cash in the early-morning break and enter of a downtown St. Albert pharmacy.

The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy on St. Michael Street, just off Perron Street, was broken into at roughly 7 a.m. Monday morning, said St. Albert RCMP Const. Travis Matlock.

“It was just a regular break and enter. They just came through a door that was locked and secured and then they went looking for probably money or medications with a street value,” said pharmacy owner Alex, who did not want his last name published.

He said the suspects caused minimal damage to the door and only made off with change from the till.

“I think the (drugs) they were looking for, I don’t carry. I don’t have a large inventory and the ones I do have are quite secure,” he said.

A sign outside the pharmacy entrance said drugs like Oxycontin – a strong and addictive pain reliever – can only be special ordered from the pharmacy.

Alex said the pharmacy is under video surveillance, adding he has turned the footage over to the RCMP.

Police were tipped to the burglary by an alarm in the pharmacy. They were on scene for much of the day Monday investigating the break and enter.

Matlock said at the time he couldn't comment on suspects or stolen merchandise as the investigation was still in the early stages.

Representatives from the RCMP could not be reached by deadline Tuesday to provide an update on the investigation.

The adjoining St. Albert Medical Clinic was delayed opening Monday as police continued their investigation. The clinic resumed operations at roughly 9:30 a.m.
