SWEEPING TO VICTORY – Abby Marks, left, of St. Albert and Paige Papley drag a rock for Team Sturmay of the University of Alberta Pandas at the Alberta Junior Curling Tour’s Players Championship last weekend at St. Albert Curling Club. The U21 national champions and world silver medallists, with Selena Sturmay as skip, Marks at third, Kate Goodhelpsen at second and Papley as lead, beat Kayla Skrlik of the Glencoe Club of Calgary 5-4 in Sunday’s final. The Saville Centre rink produced the winning point in the eighth end for its fifth consecutive victory in the six-team women’s competition after losing the opening draw 7-5 to Zoe Cinnamon of Cochrane. Skrlik was the A qualifier and Sturmay won the B qualifier 8-6 against Cinnamon’s U18 lineup. The semifinal was 8-1 in six ends for Sturmay against Cinnamon. Sturmay and Skrlik were ranked first and second, respectively, on the provincial U21 junior tour. The two rinks also clashed in the U21 provincial final as Sturmay counted one in eight and stole deuces in nine and 10 for the 7-6 championship victory.
