A man who allegedly set fire to his home last year is set to plead in provincial court in coming weeks.

Jabbar Jahanroshan has been charged with one count of arson for fraudulent purposes. The fire which ravaged his 19 Oak Point home in December 2012 caused more than $500,000 in damage.

The 59-year-old appeared in St. Albert court on Monday to face the arson charge as well as two counts of failing to comply with the conditions of his undertaking – one condition was to stay away from his Oak Point home.

Court heard Jahanroshan went to the house on Feb. 2 at 3:50 p.m. because of flooding at the residence. He pleaded guilty to one count related to the undertaking – the other was withdrawn – and was handed a $200 fine with a $30 victim fine surcharge.

Jahanroshan intends to plead not guilty to the arson charge and will appear in court May 13 to set a trial date.

A St. Albert man will spend the next two months behind bars for stealing gas from a local business in order to fill up his mom’s van.

Lance Kevin Staroszik appeared in court via CCTV from the Edmonton Remand Centre and pleaded guilty to one charge of theft under $5,000.

Court heard on March 3 at 7 a.m. an employee of Jazz Plumbing and Gas Fitting saw a man siphoning gas from one of the company vehicles parked in the lot. The man, who was later identified as Staroszik, was eventually pulled over by RCMP after driving away from the scene in his mother’s van.

Provincial crown prosecutor John Donahoe read from Staroszik’s two page criminal record dating back to 1986. He received 90 days in custody for his most recent charges of theft and break and enter.

Judge Bruce Garriock handed Staroszik a sentence of 120 days in jail. Charges of property mischief and possession of stolen property were withdrawn.

Staroszik has 63 days left to serve.

A man will be off the road for at least three months after driving while under the influence of alcohol while passing through a school zone.

Christopher Chartrand appeared in St. Albert court on Monday facing charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle, driving over the legal blood alcohol limit and failure to attend court.

Court heard on Oct. 4, 2011 a witness reported to the RCMP that a man was erratically driving through a school zone at 3:30 p.m. No children were present at the time. RCMP pulled Chartrand over and noted signs of impairment. Chartrand provided two breath samples reading 160 milligrams of alcohol in one hundred millilitres of blood.

The 33-year-old pleaded guilty to driving over the legal blood alcohol limit as well as failing to appear for the trial relating to his charges in June 2012.

Donahoe notified the court of Chartrand’s criminal record dating back to 1999 for an impaired driving charge.

Judge Bruce Garriock handed Chartrand a total of $1,955 in fines, including a victim fine surcharge and a one-year driving prohibition, with the option of applying to the interlock program after three months.
