A man found in a hotel room littered with empty alcohol bottles had his accommodations changed to a jail cell for the weekend and on Monday was handed a $700 fine.
Wesley Kyle Chalifoux, 19, pleaded guilty to a single count of breaching his bail conditions.
Chalifoux was arrested Saturday night at the Best Western Hotel after police were called about an unruly guest.
When they went to the room they found Chalifoux passed out in his room, which was littered with bottles of alcohol.
Officers then learned Chalifoux was out on bail at the time with a requirement he not consume alcohol.
The Crown was seeking more jail time for the breach to enforce the need to have bail conditions respected.
Chalifoux said he was eager to return to his work as a roofer and his brief jail stint had enforced the need for him to turn his life around.
“I don’t want to lose my job.”
In handing down his decisions Judge Bruce Garriock said he was giving the young man an opportunity to turn his life around and stay out of trouble.
“I am taking Mr. Chalifoux at his word that he has grown up.”
A 28-year-old man pleading guilty for an assault on his wife will spend the next 12 months on a tough probation order.
The young man pleaded guilty to a single count of assault Monday and was handed the sentence that will require him to abide by stringent conditions.
The exact details of the altercation are unclear, but the man’s wife reported the incident to police on April 17, 2010, saying she had been left with a black eye following an assault that began with a verbal argument and then escalated.
The young man was placed on probation for the next 12 months with conditions that he not consume any alcohol, take counselling for domestic violence and provide random samples to confirm his sobriety if his probation officer demands them.
The probation is part of a suspended sentence. Judge R.W. Bradley reminded the man that if he failed to live up to the conditions, he could be a sentenced on the charges again.
