An alcohol-fuelled bar fight will put one man behind bars for more than a month.

Gregory T. Blackwell, 24, appeared in St. Albert Provincial Court Monday via closed-circuit television from the Fort Saskatchewan Correctional Centre. He pleaded guilty to two counts of breaching release conditions and one count of assault.

Crown Prosecutor John Donahoe told the court that Blackwell punched a man outside The Beer Hunter in St. Albert at roughly 2:30 a.m. on Sept. 25, 2011.

The man, who was waiting for his wife to pick him up from the establishment, was knocked out and fell to the ground, hitting his head on the pavement.

“(Blackwell) shouldn’t have consumed alcohol. He shouldn’t have been at The Beer Hunter,” Donahoe said.

At the time of the assault, Blackwell was under orders to abstain from alcohol and report to a probation officer, both of which he failed to do.

Defence lawyer Gary Strangway said Blackwell has been in custody since Aug. 29, after being picked up on outstanding warrants in British Columbia.

“I’m just trying to take responsibility for what I’ve done,” Blackwell said.

A joint sentencing submission of 30 days in jail, with credit for time served in pre-sentence custody, was accepted by Judge Bruce Garriock.

Donahoe withdrew four remaining charges of breaching release conditions.

A man targeted in a major drug-trafficking search warrant executed in Fort McMurray in early 2011 walked away with a steep fine Monday.

Federal crown prosecutor Kevin Short told the court that Walid Fadl Safadi was one of several individuals found in a residence when it was searched by Fort McMurray RCMP.

He was found in possession of $8,000 cash, deemed the proceeds of crime.

“He was there, he knew what was going on,” Short said, adding Safadi has a record, the last offence apparently dating from 1999.

Safadi, 31, pleaded guilty to possession of the proceeds of crime and was handed a $5,750 fine.

Short withdrew seven additional drug- and firearm-related charges and ordered the forfeiture of all seized items.
