A young man who stole his mother’s credit card and spent with abandon was placed on a tight probationary term.
The 18-year-old man pleaded guilty to a single count of possession of stolen property plus breaching a youth court probation order. He was given 18 months probation.
Police were called on Sept. 21 when the mother noticed her MasterCard was missing from her wallet. The next day she found her son sleeping in a backyard hot tub with his backpack lying on the ground.
She looked in his backpack and found her credit card plus several payment receipts from liquor and convenience stores.
Under the conditions of his probation the man will have to abstain from alcohol and attend Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous at least once per week.
He will have to take any counselling his probation officer recommends, which could include a stint at a residential treatment centre.
He will also have to pay his mother $139.78 in restitution.
Judge Dan Garden warned the man that after being through youth probation and now adult probation, a jail sentence could be in his future.
He said he should take the chance to turn his life around.
“This is going to be your last chance to do that.”
A man caught stealing from a local store was handed jail time and probation.
Terry James Munro pleaded guilty to the single count of theft and was sentenced to 13 days in jail as well as a year of probation.
He was also out on bail at the time.
Police were called Nov. 1 after a store security officer at Zellers spotted Munro putting on a pair of headphones and walking out the door.
He has already spent eight days in jail and will have to spend five more before he is released.
While he is on the probation he will have to take any court ordered counselling.
