A 37-year-old man will spend the next two months in jail after swinging a fish bat at a woman and threatening to set fire to her truck.

Colby Robert Chard appeared in court Monday via closed-circuit television from the Edmonton Remand Centre. He pleaded guilty to using a weapon as a threat as well as resisting a peace officer.

On Sept. 25 just before 8 a.m., St. Albert RCMP were called to a home in Grandin where a woman noticed the driver’s side door of her truck had been left open. When she went to investigate, a man – later identified as Chard – was inside and picked up a fish bat from inside the truck and began swinging it at her.

Before Chard hopped on a bicycle and left, he told the woman he would come back later with friends and set fire to her truck.

Later that morning around 10:15 a.m., RCMP found Chard lying on the sidewalk near the entrance to a daycare. He was arrested for public intoxication.

Chard has been in jail since his arrest. He was handed a sentence of four months in jail.

A man who plans to live and work in St. Albert when he gets out of jail will be doing even more time after officers found a homemade knife in his underwear.

Mitchell A. Kuszmaniuk appeared in person in St. Albert court Monday and pleaded guilty to two counts of obstructing a peace officer and two counts of disobeying a court order.

The charges stemmed from an incident in February when Kuszmaniuk – who was in custody at the Drumheller Institution for robbery – began throwing items around in his cell and covered his cell window.

Corrections officers found he was hiding a shank in his underwear. Kuszmaniuk said he needed it to protect himself from the prison’s rival gangs.

The 21-year-old was released from prison in June.

In September, RCMP were doing a routine patrol in St. Albert when they came across Kuszmaniuk. He gave them false information about who he was.

Judge Bruce Garriock sentenced Kuszmaniuk to a total of 90 days. He plans to live and work in St. Albert upon his release.

A 23-year-old man is on his way back to psychological treatment after he was caught selling stolen property on Kijiji and joyriding in a stolen car.

Cody Beaudoin appeared in St. Albert court Monday and pleaded guilty to possession of stolen property under $5,000 and taking a motor vehicle without the owner’s permission.

In August, a woman reported to RCMP that a set of golf clubs, valued at $1,000, was stolen from her vehicle. A couple weeks later, she saw an ad for the clubs on Kijiji. The seller’s address was a few blocks away from her home.

St. Albert RCMP arrested and charged Beaudoin and another man for possession of stolen property. Beaudoin said someone else had stolen the clubs and he was asked to hide them.

This was Beaudoin’s second brush with the law this past summer. In the early morning hours of July 18, the 23-year-old took a joyride in his father’s car without his consent and without a driver’s license. The car sustained between 10 and $15,000 in damage to the front end.

Using a restorative justice approach, Beaudoin was given a conditional discharge. He will return to Alberta Hospital to receive treatment for psychological problems including schizophrenia and psychosis.

He will also be put on probation for one year.
