A young man with possible anger issues was sentenced Monday to 18 months of probation for two emotional outbursts that ended with him threatening people or hitting them.
Donald George Dupuis pleaded guilty to a single count of uttering threats and one of assault stemming from the two incidents.
Both of the incidents began as arguments with family members that escalated to the point Dupuis threatened or hit someone.
Crown prosecutor Scott Pittman read a lengthy list of facts into the record that went far beyond what Dupuis was actually charged with, but he said they were necessary to understand the full context of the incidents.
On Nov. 30, 2010 Dupuis got into an argument with several family members and at times threatened to hurt himself.
In the heat of the argument he also threatened to kill his mother. A few days later he got into another argument, this time with his girlfriend and pushed her into a wall.
The conditions of his probation require Dupuis to continue to take any medication he is prescribed, to take any counselling he is directed and to have no contact with a number of people, including his mother and former girlfriend.
The court granted an exception that will allow those family members to end the no-contact condition if they choose to.
An unpaid restaurant bill of $68 cost a young man $1,000 in fines.
Shivneel Kumar pleaded guilty Monday to one count of fraudulently obtaining food and one count of breach a recognizance.
Kumar was at O’Maille’s Irish Pub on June 3 when he ran up the tab, but then told staff he did not have the available cash.
He first said he could pay if he went to a bank machine and a staff member went with him. He then went to a grocery store across the street where he said his brother was working and would be able to settle the situation, but his brother was not at the store.
Staff members then called the police and he was arrested.
Shivneel also pleaded guilty to breaching his bail conditions for failing to report regularly to police.
In addition to the fines, Kumar was placed on probation for three months. The only conditions are that he report to his probation officer and repay his debt at the bar.
A 41-year-old man will spend his weekends behind bars after attacking his girlfriend.
Gregory Wilfred Brown pleaded guilty to a single count of assault on Monday and was handed the 14-day sentence, which will be served intermittently on weekends.
Brown was arrested on Oct. 23 last year following an argument with his girlfriend that ended with him putting his hands on her throat.
The woman was not seriously injured in the assault and while Brown was originally charged with a more serious offence, the Crown agreed to the lesser charge as part of a plea bargain.
In addition to the 14 days in jail, Brown will be on probation for a year with requirements that he attend counselling, not drink alcohol and have no contact with his now ex-girlfriend.
Before being sentenced, Brown apologized to the court and said it had been largely the result of too much drinking.
“I am very sorry, I know that I have a problem.”
