A Westlock-area man died Friday afternoon in a car accident in northeast Sturgeon County.
Police believe the 28-year-old man was killed instantly when he collided with a stock trailer being hauled by a pick-up truck.
The accident occurred at the intersection of Township Road 570 and Range Road 272 after the man ran a stop sign and hit the trailer.
While the accident remains under investigation, Cpl. Jason Zazulak said police are confident the young man drove through the stop sign.
He was driving a later model Chevrolet Caprice and hit the stock trailer broadside.
The trailer and the Caprice both ended up in the ditch on the north side of the intersection. Zazulak said the car was forced into a power pole, badly damaging the car and sheering the pole from the ground.
Zazulak said the RCMP believes the car was travelling at approximately 60 or 70 km/h at the time of the collision.
He said police do not believe the driver was impaired and while there was light snow on the ground, they can’t say for certain whether it played a role in him failing to stop.
“The principal cause of the collision was him going through the stop sign.”
The driver of the pick-up truck along with his wife and two children were uninjured in the crash. A horse in the back of the trailer received minor injuries.
