An 83-year-old Gibbons man was airlifted to an Edmonton hospital after his car was struck by a semi on a Sturgeon County highway.
RCMP were called to Highway 28 near Range Road 234, between Bon Accord and Gibbons, shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday, with STARS Air Ambulance being dispatched minutes later.
"The first witness indicated that the individual travelling eastbound in the small car attempted to do a U-turn on the highway," said Morinville RCMP Const. Yelena Avoine.
Both vehicles were travelling east on Highway 28 and Avoine said the area was blanketed in fog at the time of the collision.
The 83-year-old man was the sole occupant of the car and the driver and lone occupant of the semi truck did not suffer any injuries.
RCMP rerouted traffic in both directions for roughly two hours as they investigated the collision.
Avoine said the collision remains under investigation and charges are pending against the driver of the car.
Collision fatality
A collision in northern Alberta Thursday claimed the life of a 54-year-old Gibbons man.
Ronald Foster died at the scene of the collision, which occurred on Highway 881 near Conklin, roughly 158 kilometres northeast of Lac La Biche.
A 39-year-old male and a man in his 20s were both airlifted to Edmonton hospital in critical but stable condition.
The collision shut down the highway for roughly two hours and remains under investigation. Police said road conditions may have played a factor in the collision.
