The chrome. The rumbling engines. The pristine black tires.

It’s for these reasons and so many more that people will come out in droves for this weekend’s annual Autorama. The local car show is by no means the biggest, when you consider that Rock’n August is just around the corner, but it is the first one out of the gates. It seems like everyone is itching to go for a ride.

Eric Sigvaldason is one of the newest members of the St. Albert Cruisers, the group that puts on these events. He expects the St. Albert Centre parking lot is going to be packed tight with about 150 parked cars, not counting the vehicles of attendees of course.

“Our show and shine is one of the first of the year. It gets everybody out. It gets the cobwebs out.”

There will be something for everybody as there are categories for classic and vintage cars, hot rods, motorcycles, classic trucks, foreign classics and muscle cars.

If Sunday is too long for you to wait then you can watch the annual Rainmaker Rodeo Parade on Saturday morning when several members of the Cruisers will be driving their sweet rides.

Suzan Krecsy, executive director at the food bank, is pretty enthusiastic about the prospect of seeing all those vintage beauties. The food bank is charity of choice for the Cruisers.

“I absolutely love cars,” she said, adding how much she appreciates the Cruisers using the show to bolster awareness of hunger in our community.

“This comes at such a good time of year for us because donations are typically down. Anything that helps bring in donations and raise awareness is really important. It’s such a fun day too. This is such a generous thing they do for us.”

When asked how things were at the agency, she had a one-word answer: “Busy.”

The 19th annual Autorama runs Sunday at St. Albert Centre from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration for participants is $10 and trophies will be awarded to the top 15. There will be family activities including a scavenger hunt on site.

Non-perishable food donations will be accepted and all net proceeds from the event will go to the food bank.
