Reader’s Digest has named St. Albert Canada’s healthiest community, thanks to one local resident who nominated the city for two awards.

Sharon McNally, a 28-year resident of St. Albert and mother of two, submitted a description of St. Albert for two categories in the contest – Healthiest and Greenest. Submissions were put to a vote and were separately adjudicated by a panel of judges.

McNally’s description of why St. Albert was the healthiest city came out in first place in that category and garnered 701 votes. Her submission for greenest city was the runner-up to Craik, Sask.

“Health just came to mind,” McNally said. “Bringing my kids up, they were involved in dance and soccer. I just found with Servus Credit Union Place and being a newer member there, we have a lot of opportunities locally.”

As for St. Albert being the greenest community, McNally said that one is a “no-brainer.”

“It’s known for its green spaces.”

Both Monique St. Louis, the city’s director of recreation services, and Diane Enger, the facility director for Servus Place, were pleased McNally’s submission on health was recognized.

“To me it just illustrates all that’s happened within the community by community groups, the public and the city to make it so healthy,” said St. Louis.

McNally won $1,000 because her submission was selected. You can read it at www.readersdigest.ca/cmit.
