The city has awarded the manufacturing contract for its new waste containers to Quebec-based IPL Inc., a maker of plastic products.

Delivery of the new carts to St. Albert households will proceed from late April to mid-May, said solid waste program co-ordinator Christian Benson.

“We’re going to be able to post a distribution schedule so people know in their neighbourhood when their cart will be arriving,” he said.

The city is adding curbside organics collection to its waste disposal program. This shift will see each household that currently receives curbside garbage collection receive a brown cart for garbage and a green cart for household organics. The new program begins June 1.

The final cost of the cart purchase hasn’t been determined but it will definitely fall within the $2.1 million set aside in the budget, said public works director Glenn Tompolski.

The city is ordering a total of 35,000 carts, he said.

Carts for household garbage are available in three sizes: 60, 120 or 240 litres. These sizes are based on the current subscription levels for the city’s pay-as-you-throw system.

Residents will receive a garbage cart based on their current subscription and will automatically receive a 240-litre organics carts unless they request a smaller 120-litre cart that is also available.

Residents can change their cart sizes by calling the utilities branch at 780-459-1520.

The carts will be bar coded to allow each one to be assigned to a specific house address.

Now that the city has finalized its cart manufacturer, it will be displaying more samples in various city buildings, such as Servus Credit Union Place, Fountain Park Pool and St. Albert Place, Benson said.

“We should actually have a set in all the high traffic areas,” Benson said. “We’ll be taking them to trade shows so people can get a look at them.”

The city has also awarded a contract for indoor food scrap collection containers that will be supplied to households along with the delivery of waste and organics carts. The kitchen collectors will be made by Ottawa-based manufacturer Sure-Close.
