The fifth annual Saint City Rotary Club Charity Golf Classic tees off Thursday, Aug. 22 at Sandpiper Golf & Country Club.
The event is one of the club’s primary fundraising initiatives. Last year, the Charity Classic raised close to $30,000 for Rotary-supported causes.
Linda Perras, event co-ordinator with Saint City Rotary says the money raised next month will go towards funding three major projects.
The first is phase one of Rotary Park in Riel.
“It’s going to have the first-ever cube climbing wall in Canada, and we’re going to have fire pits and picnic tables and benches,” Perras says. “And then eventually we’d like to put in a boat launch or something like that.”
Further from home, the funds will help to build a day care, teen centre and kitchen for the Families of Hope group in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Canadian Medical Teams Abroad (CAMTA) will also benefit from funds raised on the course. The organization performs hip and limb replacements in Ecuador.
“When the golfers come out to the CAMTA hole, they will actually have to golf either with one foot or with one arm,” Perras says. “It’s one of the fun holes, and the CAMTA people are there to tell them about what’s going on.”
The Charity Classic is more than 60 per cent sold and the Saint City Rotary is still looking for sponsors.
