A commuter on Anthony Henday Drive fought the laws of physics and lost Monday afternoon.
At about 1:30 p.m. an eastbound car veered off the freeway and over the guardrail in between the east and westbound bridges that cross Veness Road/142 Street, near Campbell Business Park. The car went flying through the air before it landed in the ditch between the train tracks and the road that lay 10 to 15 metres below.
The male driver was treated at the hospital for an injury to his ankle.
“It appears that he collided with the guardrail and then may have rolled over top and into the ditch,” said assigned sergeant Jonathan Croft of the Edmonton Police Service.
Croft could not comment on the age and residence of the man nor the make of the car. The car did have airbags that may have saved the man from worse injuries, he said.
No charges have been laid at this time as the investigation continues. Police believe that speed and alcohol are potential factors in the collision.
The vehicle was heavily damaged and lost some fluid but Croft said any spills were contained immediately.
