Campbell Park lunch mainstay closes

After 17 years of serving up soups and sandwiches, a Campbell Business Park institution is set to close its doors.

The Soup & Sandwich Shack, known around the neighbourhood as Dan’s, will serve its last customers Saturday.

Deciding to close the shop was a hard one to make, but it’s time to give the business and its owners a rest, said owner Dan Campanella.

“We are going to retire,” he said. “Now it is time to have fun.”

He said he and his wife plan to retire to Vancouver Island and put the business behind them.

Lunch-time lineups regularly reach the door at the Campbell spot, whose clientele includes employees from a number of nearby businesses as well as people from all over St. Albert. The spot wasn’t chosen for any particular reason, however.

“I guess it was just on a whim,” said Campanella. “I happened to be driving by and thought Campbell Park could be a good place and it worked out well. It worked out really well.”

The restaurant’s soup and sandwiches are all home-made and that’s part of their appeal, Campanella said.

“I have always had a passion for food,” he said.

Campanella said he’ll miss all his regular customers, many of whom dropped off flowers and thank you cards this week, but he’s ready to give up the work.

Customers need not go hungry, however, as a new restaurant will open in the space just next week, Campanella said.

Tentatively called Rico’s Bistro, the new restaurant will be similar to Dan’s in a lot of ways, but does plan on adding some new items to the menu, he said. Campanella will be on hand for the first few days to help with the new restaurant’s opening.
