MOVING AND GROWING – The St. Albert Sport Chek location will move next year into an expanded space at St. Albert Centre.

The Children’s Place is scheduled to open Saturday morning at St. Albert Centre.

The retailer provides a wide range of “latest fashion trends and head-to-toe outfitting” for newborns and children up to age 12, said spokesperson Melissa Matson. The St. Albert location will be 3,400 square feet in size, and the store’s sixth location in the Edmonton region.

“We are excited to be in St. Albert because Edmonton and the surrounding market is one of our most successful in Canada,” Matson wrote in an email.

“St. Albert is a vibrant, growing community. We have always wanted to be here and it is right for us considering the big changes the mall is making.”

The St. Albert location will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and 12 noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

St. Albert Sport Chek is scheduled to move into its new location at St. Albert Centre by August 2014. The store is now adding another 34,000 square feet of retail space to the mall.

Jillian Creech, general manager of the centre, could not yet confirm who would be moving into the old Sport Chek location once that store moves. More information is expected to become available in the new year, she said.

“Negotiations are underway but I have nothing yet to confirm on that,” she said. “I think it’s still early for our releasing team.”

Sport Chek’s parent company FGL Sports Ltd. could not be reached for comment.

A local fitness training facility recently expanded its space due to continued growth in its customer base.

Juan Medrano, owner of St. Albert-based Movimento Fitness, said the facility doubled in size this summer, expanding its existing space to 2,500 square feet. Movimento is now serving more than 100 people, providing personal and group fitness training, he said.

“We continue to grow and we have a great support from the St. Albert community and have been blessed with support,” he said. “We ended up running out of room about a year ago and now expanded over into the next bay.”

As part of an annual Christmas campaign, Medrano added that any newcomers are now able to test the facility for free until the end of November.

All they have to do is bring a battery-free toy every time they want to work out, he said. The toy will then be donated to Santas Anonymous in Edmonton.

Movimento Fitness is located at #270, 16 Renault Cres. in Riel Business Park and can be reached at 780-459-6684 or at movimentofitness.ca. Training sessions run from $35 to $65.

St. Albert-based Tudor Glen Veterinary Hospital recently signed a five-year sponsorship for the south fieldhouse at Servus Credit Union Place. The field hosts a wide range of events and activities, including recreational and sports events, markets, job fairs, and voting stations for elections.

Tudor Glen co-owner Scott Wilde said the animal clinic had wanted to get involved with Servus Place for a number of years. After all, kids and animals both love to run and chase things, he said.

“The opportunity finally came up and so we jumped at it,” he said. “We just really have to be part of it and it seems a good fit for both of us … we look forward to having our kids play on the soccer field that we sponsor.”

Wilde added that the animal hospital wants to promote healthy, active lifestyles for both pets and their owners. Though he regrets that pets are not welcome on the field, he said their owners would certainly benefit from it.
