Streetside Grill employees left hanging after the resto-pub’s mid-June closure received the compensation they’ve been awaiting for the last six weeks.

Roughly 15 of the 18 employees were without pay when the business closed its doors last month, but now have cash in-hand.

“I had a good reaction from the kids that I saw. They were very appreciative. It felt good to get that done,” said co-owner Tony van Leeuwen.

Several employees filed employment standards complaints with the province against Streetside Grill in order to recover the earnings left owing to them, some claiming $1,500 to $2,000.

After hearing of the complaints, van Leeuwen told the St. Albert Gazette he would pay the employees by week’s end.

Van Leeuwen said roughly $6,000 was paid to the former employees, with another $2,000 remaining. He said cheques for the remaining funds will be drafted in the coming days.

“[Employees] were quite happy that I was doing that,” he said, adding he received warm a welcome from many of the employees’ parents.

Streetside Grill closed its doors roughly one year after opening. He said the business just wasn’t making money.

Negotiations are taking place to sell the restaurant, which is expected to open under the same name in coming months.

ReidBuilt Homes signed a $120,000, six-year commitment with Servus Credit Union Place for the naming rights of the ReidBuilt Homes Community Gymnasium.

“We wanted to commit to St. Albert and let people know that we’re not going anywhere,” said Jeremy Main, marketing manager.

ReidBuilt Homes will contribute $20,000 annually for the length of the sponsorship contract.

Diane Enger, facility director at Servus Place, said ReidBuilt Homes is a good fit for the sponsorship role.

“We look to attract companies or organizations or groups whose values align with the city’s and with Servus Place and then who are interested in supporting active living in St. Albert,” she said.

The facility receives roughly $500,000 from sponsorship each year, enabling its operators to improve and add programs and services.

ReidBuilt Homes has been operating in St. Albert for two decades and is the company behind the new Riverside development in northwest St. Albert, a housing project aimed at first-time homebuyers.
