An overnight HVAC failure is to blame for the days-long closure of the Fountain Park Recreation Centre.
St. Albert’s most popular pool went down Saturday, Nov. 2. Karsen Zwiers, senior project manager with the city’s Engineering department, said part of the problem with the part was it failed overnight.
The facility’s main HVAC system, responsible for blowing new air at the right temperature and humidity into the building, has nine motors. One failed, causing the entire unit to shut down.
“The outage began overnight, which caused further damage to critical electrical components within the HVAC unit,” Zwiers said in an email.
Those components have been replaced and a new motor is on the way. The HVAC unit can run on the remaining eight motors in the meantime.
The City is committed to operating FPRC safely and efficiently and ensuring the safety of its employees and all users,” he said. “The City has ensured additional monitoring of the unit will be completed.”
Installation of the new motor will require another shutdown; Zwiers said this would be done at a time that minimizes the impact to programs.
There’s another aquatic shutdown on the horizon as work is planned for the Landrex feature at Servus Credit Union Place between Nov. 17 and 28.
Membership holders will be welcomed at FPRC according to the city.
