Two individuals were taken to hospital Saturday night after their truck slammed into a tree and pole on a residential street in Grandin.
Alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in the single-vehicle collision occurring at roughly 10:30 p.m. on Gillian Crescent, said St. Albert RCMP Cpl. Laurel Kading.
A 2010 Dodge Ram pickup truck, driven by a 41-year-old male from Vimy, was steered off the residential roadway into a tree and pole directly in front of a home. The vehicle was “extensively” damaged in the collision.
The man and his 42-year-old male passenger, also from Vimy, had to be extricated from the vehicle by St. Albert firefighters. Neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.
Both individuals were taken to Edmonton hospitals. The driver was not seriously injured and was released from hospital. The passenger, however, remains in hospital with serious injuries.
Kading said it is important for people to make a plan for how they are getting home before they consume alcohol.
“Alcohol primarily affects the judgment centre in the brain,” she said. “They might have had good intentions when they started (drinking), but their judgment centre can change.”
The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending against the driver of the pickup truck.
