St. Albert’s Amplify Youth Festival is recruiting youth and adult volunteers for the inaugural event running Oct. 17 and 18 at The Enjoy Centre.

On Friday evening and Saturday daytime, volunteers 13 and older are needed to man various positions: box office ticket pickup, event ticket takers and wrist banding, concession attendants, workshop runners and site assistants.

Volunteers will be required to work three- to four-hour shifts. In return they receive a Famoso pizza lunch, free admission to Saturday’s Virginia to Vegas concert and a baseball T-shirt from American Apparel.

“It is sweat shop free and that was important to the youth committee. This event promotes youth values and we wanted to make sure the T-shirts were not made by youth that didn’t have the same advantages in different parts of the world,” said Kathleen Bell, youth festival associate.

Bell has been at Amplify’s command centre directing traffic and providing an anchor for diverse groups wanting more information on the festival.

On Saturday evening, volunteer adults are requested to assist in watching over the Virginia to Vegas concert finale.

“All people have to do is keep an eye on things. There will be lots of staff on site. We just want extra bodies and eyes. It’s a big room and we want everybody to feel safe.”

Bell added the specially trained security would follow standard procedures in checking for alcohol, drugs and weapons.

In total, organizers require up to 30 volunteers.

“I think it’s such a positive, energetic event and people will get a lot out of it.”

Bell also mentioned that a volunteer appreciation night would be held on Thursday prior to the festival.

“Instead of doing it after the event when everyone is tired, we’re going to do it before and get everyone pumped up. That way everybody meets each other and creates a tightly knit group of volunteers.”

Application deadline is Oct. 8. For more information call 780-459-1597 or go online to stalbert.ca/experience/amplify-festival.
