My how the decades have flown by. St. Albert Children’s Theatre (SACT) is now 30 years old and what better way to celebrate a landmark year than by having a homecoming party to celebrate past achievements.
It’s About Time!, an evening of stories, song, music and video clips of past productions, takes place Thursday, Dec. 30 at the Arden Theatre.
Over the years, thousands of children and teenagers — all with a passion for the stage — have created portals of fantasy and brought to life magical worlds for our viewing pleasure.
Several months ago artistic director Janice Flower set up a homing beacon to all these talents scattered across the continent. Many responded with gusto and were more than eager to square off once again on the Arden stage, their first entry point into theatre.
“The planning was decided a year ago, but in this business it all comes down to the 11th hour,” laughs Flower adding that It’s About Time will be populated mainly with alumni.
One of the evening’s special guests is founding artistic director Maralyn Ryan who coincidentally is directing The Black Bonspiel of Willie MacCrimmon for the Continental Cup in January.
Also on tap are Ryan’s two daughters, actress/puppeteer Kate and TV personality/theatre director Bridget. Flower reveals that the witty, ad-libbing Bridget will be the master of ceremonies.
Toronto-based Dan Abrahamson, author of the runaway hit Funny Business along with good friend Jeff Moulton, who just finished a run of 25th Putnam Spelling Bee, will be in town to rock the rafters.
Jenna Dykes-Busby (Annie) now trying to break into the Toronto scene, and Ken Stewart (Guys and Dolls) who has been honing his artistry at the Shaw Festival, also make an appearance. “I’m so excited Ken is coming. He’s done so many things and he’ll be here for six weeks.”
Travelling the furthest from Los Angeles where she now lives with husband Josh Dean is Celina Dean-Stachow (Lucky Stiff). In a multi-media presentation, Flower has arranged to show a clip of Dean-Stachow’s original character Annabel Glick in Lucky Stiff. “The clip starts the song and then it cross fades into real life with Celina picking it up.”
Damien Atkins (Pinocchio/The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe), one of SACT’s brightest constellations and now living in Toronto, was originally featured on the bill. However, an unexpected business commitment stalled those plans.
But in a surprise move, Flower has arranged for the actor/playwright of theatre, film and radio to be present at the celebrations through a special phone interview.
Playing back-up instrumentals are Mike Lent (bass), Brian Thurgood (percussion) and Flower on piano.
“It’s going to be a wonderful event and a great opportunity to see some wonderful talent, especially for people who saw these performers as kids. But it will certainly not be exclusive to anyone. It’s just a wonderful evening of all-around fun.”
Holiday box office hours are Dec. 29 and 30 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
