There’s nothing that compares to Sorrentino Restaurant’s Garlic Festival, a local tradition now 25 years running.
Typically the festival is in effect throughout the month of April, and the entire menu is dedicated to the smelly, bulb-shaped vegetable.
Before listing the food, it should be mentioned that Sorrentino’s Big Garlic Night is Wednesday, April 27. During the restaurant’s operating hours, five per cent of all sales are directed to the non-profit Buchanan Centre for Parkinson’s Disease.
Throughout the month, guests can nosh on six garlicky soups and salads, three pasta dishes, one risotto and three entrees. And for dessert there is garlic ice cream that I have been assured has a caramel taste with a light garlicky after taste.
And the entire repast can be washed down with garlic flavoured martinis and caesars.
National Garlic Day is Tuesday, April 19 so just follow the aroma. For reservations call 780-459-1411.
Testing a new perogy
The family operated Taste of Ukraine boasts some of the best traditional food in the region.
Matriarch Orysia Wozniak runs the kitchen and creates new dishes. This spring she has introduced the braised short rib perogy at the request of some patrons searching for a meat-filled dumpling.
“A meat-filled perogy is super popular in the Ukraine,” says manager Aaron Sorochan. “So far we’ve tried it out for three weeks and have gotten very good reviews.”
City TV’s Dinner Television also plans to feature the popular Ukrainian restaurant on Monday, April 25 with Wozniak whipping up a dinner for celebrity guests.
