The sizzle is on. Some of Canada’s best amateur cooks and professional chefs from across Alberta and the country are gathered this weekend at the Canadian Food Championships.
This multi-day competition is a search for qualifiers to Team Canada competing at the World Food Championships on November 2017 in Orange Beach, Alabama.
More than $50,000 in cash and prizes are up for grabs.
Three competitors from St. Albert are involved in the cook-off. Bellerose grad, two-time Canadian Food Championships competition winner and executive chef at Woodwork, Lindsay Porter leads the pack.
Local resident Miroslav Kolasa from Wind Rose Catering is taking his second crack at the jackpot. And Paul Kane High grad and Red Seal chef Peter Keith, no stranger to winning international culinary competitions, is giving it his first shot.
Porter and Kolasa have both entered the steak and seafood category while Keith is showcasing his kitchen mojo in the sandwich category.
The championships run today and tomorrow at Winston Churchill Square in conjunction with Taste of Edmonton. Schedules are available at canadianfoodchampionships.ca.
One of the region’s top picks as a summer festival, Taste of Edmonton draws average annual crowds of about 500,000.
Now in hyper drive at Sir Winston Churchill Square, it will be at its busiet drawing foodies of all-ages to sample culinary delights from around town.
Heavily influenced with Asian booths, the festival also highlights African, European, Caribbean, Mexican, East Indian, Afghan, Filipino and a whole lot of comfort food.
Tickets range from a five-pack for $7.50 to a 40-pack for $60 plus GST and can be purchased at the site.
