The Black Opry rolls into St. Albert's Arden Theatre on Friday, Feb. 7.

Country music is a billion-dollar industry, and it’s predicted to continue growing. But a quick look at country’s chart toppers shows there are few Black people in the mix. The country music industry has a history of keeping a closed door to Black artists and failed to amplify their songs and experiences  —  until now.

Beyonce’s release of Cowboy Carter, an album inspired by early Black cowboys and their western fortitude, has made clear Black people have a deep and inextricable connection to country music.

While there are a limited number of Black artists scaling the charts, there is a low-key but powerful movement of Black musicians flying below the radar who bring their talents and know-how to country music.

One of North America’s most prominent revues is The Black Opry, pulling into the Arden Theatre on Feb. 7. The touring show features Black performers telling their stories and weaving a blend of country, blues, folk, roots and Americana.

Four international artists destined to perform at the Arden revue are: Nashville’s Tylar Bryant; Toronto-based singer-songwriter Shelley Hamilton; Boston’s indie folk singer-songwriter Grace Givertz, and Virginia country singer-songwriter Jett Holden.

Holly G founded Black Opry as a website in 2021 where Black artists could connect with promoters. The floodgates opened and it quickly grew into a collective that offers an important platform for every aspect of music from singer-songwriters and agents to promoters and industry heavyweights.

The platform not only assisted Black artists book gigs. Holly G also stated it has helped break down stereotypes of what people think Black country music is. It has created a diverse community filled with different styles, sounds and stories.

The Black Opry revue is at the Arden Theatre on Friday, Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $65. Call 780-459-1542 or online at tickets.stalbert.ca.
