The St. Albert Theatre Guild Entertainers (STAGE) is looking for a couple of self-help gurus with the personality of snake-oil salesmen.
The city’s newly formed amateur adult theatre troupe is on a tear with open auditions for Self-Help, a Norm Foster comedy slated to open Jan. 27, 2011.
“Norm Foster is the Canadian Neil Simon and this is a very funny play, almost with a kind of Fawlty Towers appeal,” says director Mark McGarrigle. “It’s going to be fast, funny — a lot of door slamming and moving dead bodies.”
Self-Help is a black-hearted farce about two second-rate actors playing in cheap dinner theatre productions. Hal and Cindy have been looking for the whole enchilada, but it’s always beyond their reach. Their big break comes when they decide to re-invent themselves as self-help practitioners prescribing phony advice. “It’s like the Dr. Phil blarney.”
But as their bank account fattens, they become disconnected. Enter a stressed-out maid, a nosy reporter, a bumbling cop, a wiseacre talent scout and a dead body.
McGarrigle, along with co-director Danielle Pierce, will hold auditions at Willoughby Clubhouse, 4 Willoughby Drive on Wednesday, Oct. 20 from 7 to 10 p.m.
No time slots will be arranged. It is strictly a cold read with several actors reading scenes together. Scripts will be provided beforehand. For more information, email [email protected],
