Several St. Albert artists made their presence felt at the second annual Edmonton Comic Expo last weekend.
Held at the Edmonton Expo Centre, the pop culture convention was a chance for local artists to show what they can do.
Rob Weaver, owner of Rob Michael Weaver Studios, dedicates his artwork mostly, but not completely, to George Lucas’ immortal Star Wars universe. While much of Weaver’s art features the imposing Darth Vader, he had lots of colourful art on display at his booth Saturday.
Weaver said the expo was going well, and organizers seem to have solved some of the “elbow room” issues that crept up last year. Aisles seemed to be wider, making it easier for the thousands of people to examine, and purchase, his work.
Malissa Sekela, an avowed lover of animation, creates both original and fan art under her Bzou Arts name, and dressed the part Saturday as the Black Cat, a character from the Spider-man comic book.
St. Albert anime artist Gigi Lau was also at the expo last weekend, displaying her work under her business name, eECAFE+. She said the weekend was going very well, with lots of people.
A number of big name Hollywood celebrities were there, including Christopher Lloyd of Back to the Future fame, Karl Urban who recently starred in Star Trek and Dredd, Robert Englund, whom horror fans recognize as the original Freddy Kruger from the Nightmare on Elm Street series and Ron Perlman of Hellboy fame.
Big TV names were also there, including John Barrowman from the Dr. Who television series.
Most of the expo centre was filled with booths selling new and vintage pop culture collectibles, clothing, posters, movies, comic books and novels. Autographs and photo sessions were also available.
When one seller was asked how the weekend was going, he said the only problem were very long line-ups at the food booths.
