This morning, one of the first early sightings of geese was spotted, a sure sign spring is around the corner. That and St. Albert’s third annual Spring Fling.

The St. Albert Cosmopolitan Club, organizers of the internationally recognized Rock’n August car show, is thrilled to have a sellout dance and auction.

As with the car show, every dollar is directed to diabetes research and the University of Alberta’s Edmonton Protocol for islet transplants.

“I’d definitely like to thank the public for their contributions in the fight against diabetes,” says Michael Cearns, spokesperson for Dash Rip Rock.

Dash Rip Rock’s ’80s and ’90s sizzling rock is one of the featured acts along with blues-rock magicians Lenny and the Cats and solo artist Matthew Potter.

“Lenny puts on an incredibly great show and Matthew Potter is a traditional roots musician who is acquiring a profile across the country. And he’s got a CD coming out.”

Dash Rip Rock is a booty-shakin’ seven-piece classic rock band that brings together singer Fred Miller, vocalist Kara Jaxon-Dunn, drummer Des O’Kell, keyboardist Myles Jackson, bassist Mike Hill, guitarist Bob Morin and Cearns does double duty as vocalist-guitarist.

This successful fundraiser came into being as a birthday party. Three years ago Cearns and Miller both turned 60. As the wives made birthday plans for the landmark event, the two musicians suggested a dance.

The community embraced an opportunity to get out and kick up its heels. It raised $4,000 from ticket sales. This year’s sellout has already garnered another $4,000. An added auction ups the ante.

For many in the community, it’s an opportunity to step away from our freeze-thaw cycle and reconnect with friends on Saturday, March 21 at the St. Albert Community Hall.

“It’s going to be an evening of fun. We’re raising money for diabetes. It’s a win-win.”
