Tonight marks the debut installment of a “brand new magazine-style musico-variety info-spectacle.”
That’s a mouthful for saying Varscona Theatre is providing a new avenue of hilarious fun.
This past October the company bid a bittersweet farewell to Mark Meer’s gassy Susanna Patchouli and her notorious Euro-style party chat game Oh Susanna.
It was fun while it lasted for 14 seasons.
That’s Terrific slides into Susanna’s 11 p.m. time slot on the last Saturday of each month.
While Meer and his co-host Jeff Haslam as Eros, god of love spring into new ventures, That’s Terrific launches with a new crew. They include Andrew MacDonald-Smith, Belinda Cornish, Mathew Huslof and St. Albert Children’s Theatre music director Rachel Bowron.
Special guest tonight is Edmonton’s First Lady Sarah Chan and Mayor Don Iveson’s wife. Playwright-director Stewart Lemoine produces That’s Terrific and musical accompaniment is by Erik Mortimer.
Tickets are only available at the door starting at 10:15 p.m. The Varscona Theatre is located at 10329 – 83 Ave.
Mathematics, mental illness and family relationships are thrust under the microscope in Proof, a 2001 Tony Award winning play written by David Auburn that runs Dec. 4 to 14 at Walterdale Theatre.
“It’s such an elegant script. It’s smart and real. There’s four people, but they’re flawed in their own way,” says director Kristen M. Finlay.
Catherine has just lost her father, a brilliant mathematician, after a long bout of mental illness. One of his students comes across a formula that could have been devised by him.
Catherine decides to try and prove his authorship and along each step of the way, she is fearful of following in his footsteps both mathematically and mentally.
“It’s about the complicated dynamic between siblings who have had a very different relationship with their parent. It’s about falling in love and risking intimacy. Like all good equations, it’s about relationships between different variables,” Finlay notes.
Tickets are $12 to $18 and are on sale at 780-420-1757 or online at www.tixonthesquare.ca.
