A Joyful Noise: The First Edition Choir has compiled a Remembrance Day concert that is inspired by war, yet has great hope for peace.
The 50-member choir presents Of War and Peace, a celebration of rich musical traditions that arose during times of great crises.
The music stretches across several hundred years from 19th century Felix Mendelssohn’s Hear My Prayer to 21st century Roland Majeau’s Soldier’s Cry.
Guest conductor Joy Berg of Concordia University College will be standing at the podium swinging the baton, while guest artists such as Royal Canadian Artillery Band trumpeter Russell Whitehead set the tone.
Sopranos Mireille Rijavec and Amber Krawiec team up to sing the infamous Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy popularized by The Andrews Sisters. Also on their repertoire of bittersweet Second World War tunes is Vera Lynn’s We’ll Meet Again.
In programming the concert, A Joyful Noise founder Eva Borstrand has added a frothy sing-along with memorables such as It’s a Long Way to Tipperary and Where Have All the Flowers Gone.
Borstrand said, “This is a Remembrance Day concert, but it’s different in that we are celebrating peace and that peace starts with us.”
The concert is Sunday, Nov. 10 at 3 p.m. at St. Andrew’s United Church, 9915 – 148 St. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling 780-420-1757 or online at www.tixonthesquare.ca
