Never short of work, St. Albert musician Gord Matthews steps it up tonight at Sherwood Park’s Festival Place as part of Front Porch Roots Revue’s salute to The Band and its lead bassist Rick Danko.
Front Porch Roots Revue is an Edmonton blues and roots band with singer Ron Rault, harmonica player Crawdad Canterra and Thom Moon. This time around the band’s special guests are Calgary tunesmith J.R. Shore and Vancouver’s sheet metal country singer Doug Andrews.
The Band, at its peak from the late sixties to the eighties, collaborated with icons like Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton and Ronnie Hawkins. They released well-received albums such as Music from Big Pink and The Band.
Based out of upstate New York, The Band was known for its lyrics and guitar work, complex keyboard and rhythm, percussive bass and folk bayou drumming.
Front Porch Roots Revue is out to recreate a contemporary tribute to their deeply rooted organic sound.
The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $28 to $32. Call 780-449-3378 or online at www.festivalplace.ab.ca.
Mile Zero Dance’s Unplugged is a sustainable, off the grid performance that dissects the challenges of living green.
As a follow-up to Amy Fung’s The Wired Body, dancers will distance themselves from the theatre’s power source and illuminate their scenes by the mere presence of flashlights.
A volley of Edmonton artists is lining up to perform. They are Richard Lee of Man Dance, clown of horror Mike Kennard, poet-laureate Anna Marie Sewell, actors Theresa Dextrase and Jeff Carpenter, and electro acoustic artists Dave Wall and Walter Kubanek.
Unplugged is performed at the Westbury Theatre, Old Arts Barn, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10-$15 at the door.
Anyone trying to find a ticket for pianist Eve Egoyan’s concert at the Arden Theatre tonight is out of luck. It’s a sold-out concert.
Egoyan, the sister of Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan, performs Simple Lines of Enquiry, the critically acclaimed composition by Canadian composer Ann Southam.
The concert starts at 8 p.m. with a pre-show wine tasting at 7 p.m. The Arden Theatre is at 5 St. Anne Street.
