Now firmly entrenched in the St. Albert community as an institution, Mission Hill Brass Band launches its ninth season at St. Albert United Church on Sunday, Oct. 27.
The 28-piece British-style brass band performs a diverse repertoire of genres from film scores and ballads to pop, swing and classical music.
Music director A. Daniel Skepple, Jr. gets the season started with a cornucopia of works from John Williams’ Hook Prologue and Chris De Burgh’s Lady in Red to Roy Newsome’s The Bass in the Ballroom and George Rafferty’s Baker Street.
The concert starts at 3 p.m. St. Albert United Church is located at 20 Green Grove Dr. Tickets are available at the door. Adults $15, youth $10 and children under 10 are free.
Penny and Jim Malmberg of Back Porch Swing are no strangers to the stage. As a four-piece, the Malmbergs have created a unique blend of old-time swing, folk, bluegrass and jazz that is dubbed “cowpunk.”
But sometimes musicians need the occasional project away from the band. This Tuesday night, the husband-wife duo is performing at Mark Ammar’s Tuesday Bars and Bands Open Stage at Edmonton’s Leaf Bar and Grill.
“Penny’s sweet voice and Jim’s harmonies have been heard at music festivals across Western Canada. They write songs and also perform vintage cover tunes drawn from the deep well of acoustic music. They’ll jam with just about anybody, anywhere, anytime and Jim’s work on mandolin and guitar is not to be missed,” says host Mark Ammar.
The Malmberg’s are guests at the open jam on Tuesday, Oct. 29 starting at 7:30 p.m. The Leaf Bar and Grill is at 9016 132 Ave. No cover.
