After five years on the social scene, one of Edmonton’s premier entertainment venues closes its doors on Wednesday, July 31.
Tonight is the Haven Social Club’s last big concert said owner-proprietor James Leder.
“We started the club with a vision of providing a community-based arts venue for established and upcoming artists,” he said.
And over the years bands, visual artists, poets and writers made their artistic presence known at the club.
Tonight 12 entertainment acts step up to the microphone for a mind-blowing extravaganza. The big headliners are award-winning Souljah Fiyah and Morinville’s favourite rock band Canyon Rose Outfit, fronted by lead singer Christan Maslyk.
Also on tap is award-winning folk singer Joe Nolan, who honed his chops as a busker at St. Albert Farmers’ Market for several years.
The Haven Social Club is at 15120 Stony Plain Rd. The kickoff performance of the evening is Justine Vandergriff at 7:15 p.m.
The Edmonton Film Society runs a series of summer night classic musicals every Monday until Aug. 26. This coming Monday, Deanna Durbin and Robert Stack light up the big screen with First Love.
It’s a gentle satire on the Cinderella story that set hearts aflutter across the world. In this reworking, orphan Connie Hardin is sent to live with her rich aunt and uncle. But she is hardly received with open arms, especially by her snobby cousin Barbara.
When the family is invited to a major social ball, Barbara sees to it that Connie is forced to stay home. With the help of her uncle, who acts as her fairy godfather, Connie makes it to the ball and meets her Prince Charming.
The film is screened at the Royal Alberta Museum, 102 Avenue and 128 Street and starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are regular $6, seniors-students $5, children 12 and under $3.
