Once again Rock’n August organizers are putting together a bash to remember.
This year, their annual music concert, coming a week after the classic car and truck show, features two of Canada’s icons.
The legendary Trooper and April Wine will perform at Servus Credit Union Place on Friday, August 16.
“They both have this incredible reputation,” says Mike Anderson at Trixstar Productions, the promoter for this summer event.
Opening up this grand party is Campus Thieves, a local alternative rock band with an album under their belt and a tour planned for this summer.
Trooper has sold millions of records, charted a dozen hits and received a Juno for Band of the Year. After 38 years on the music scene, they are still one of the coolest pop-rock bands around.
With hits like Raise a Little Hell and The Boys in the Bright White Sports Car, they have proved to be timeless and ageless.
Sporting 44 years of rolling with the industry’s punches, April Wine is probably Canada’s oldest rock band, a great accomplishment by any standard.
Although the only original member left is Myles Goodwyn, the band’s main songwriter, current members continue to reinforce their reputation drawing devoted fans from across the country and the world.
Inducted into the Canadian Hall of Fame, these legendary rockers are not shy about holding down a punishing schedule, all the while singing the best of April Wine.
Tickets went on sale last Friday. Bleacher tickets are $29. Floor tickets are $49. Contact www.ticketmaster.ca.
The three Gords strike again.
Gord Maxwell, Gordon Lee Worden and St. Albert’s Gord Matthews are pairing up to share a night of music at The Leaf Bar and Grill on Thursday June 6.
An adult contemporary, soft rock vocal band, these gifted singer-songwriters developed their chops as sidemen-session musicians.
They create a natural, versatile vocal blend with two standout guitarists and a bassist. Two of them also double on keyboards and drums. The music they create reminds the listener that it is possible to find authentic musical alternatives to dance remixes and mp3s.
All three are alumni of the legendary Ian Tyson. Matthews and Maxwell worked together from 1998 to 2008 appearing on Lost Herd, Songs From the Gravel Road and Yellowhead to Yellowstone. Maxwell and Worden still record and tour with Tyson. Matthews also spent several years as a sideman to k.d. lang.
The Gords’ concert starts at 9 p.m. The Leaf Bar is at 9016 – 132 Ave. Tickets are $10. Reserve by calling 780-757-2121. For more information visit www.thegords.com.
