Every good play needs a dash of mystery.

In playwright Belinda Cornish’s Little Elephants, the company’s 20th anniversary season ends with a few surprises.

Cornish, a versatile actress who refined her chops at several theatre companies from Teatro La Quindicina to Free Will Shakespeare Festival, has penned a domestic comedy about family secrets and family love.

It all starts when Marion and Alf move from their family home with the help of their two daughters. When an unexpected phone call brings to light a long-buried secret, it sets free a surge of family revelations.

This Shadow Theatre production casts some of Edmonton’s finest: Nicola Elbro, Kristi Hansen, Glenn Nelson and Val Planche.

Little Elephants runs May 23 to June 10 at the Varscona Theatre. Tickets are $10 to $26. Call Shadow at 780-434-5564 or go online to: www.tixonthesquare.ca.

In another week, Citadel Theatre’s much acclaimed production The Sound of Music finishes its run. On Sunday, May 27 artistic director Bob Baker has planned a special one-time-only sing-along.

Patrons will be encouraged to dress as their favourite character and will be given songbooks so they can sing along with the actors.

The production stars Josée Boudreau, Réjean Cournoyer and Susan Gilmour with musical direction under Don Horsburgh and design by Leslie Frankish.

For ticket information call the Citadel box office at 780-425-1820 or go online to: www.citadeltheatre.com.

Tonight the planets align for a musical concert at the Ortona Armoury where five innovative musicians put their celestial stamp on a one-of-a-kind electro-acoustic soundscape.

Members of BEAM (Boreal Electro Acoustic Music Society) present Saturn Sessions. It’s a complex process where the five musicians improvise over a bedtrack of radio signals emitted from the planet Saturn recorded by NASA’s Voyager 2.

In Saturn Sessions, Moonfyre, one-half of the electro-pop duo Pocket Universe, adds the first track with her spoken-word poetry over the planet’s signals.

These two combined tracks will be played and digital delay processor Will Truncheon lays the next track followed by two additional tracks from clarinettist Don Ross and Stanis Coleslaw’s electronics.

“This will not only be a multiple track recording, but also a concert,” says BEAM member Gene Kosowan.

The concert starts at 8 p.m. All ages admission is $5.

Since its inception, the Tuesday Night Barsnbands at LB’s Pub has introduced diverse guests.

This coming Tuesday host Mark Ammar brings in Glenn Grey, an energetic vocalist/guitarist who plays a Chicago, deep south blues style reminiscent of B.B. King, T-Bone Walker and Bo Diddley.

“I first saw and sat in with Glenn when we played at J.R.’s Pub at the Thursday Night Jam and his stage antics surprised me,” Ammar said.

The open jam starts at 9 p.m. No cover.
