One of Grandin Theatre’s great strengths is that is has one-off nights where the less commercial, non-Hollywood films get a platform.
On Thursday, May 17, Uppal Productions is importing the first ever Bollywood film for a family fun night.
Mere Brother Ki Dulhan (My Brother’s Bride) is a romantic comedy where a young man tries to arrange a marriage for his brother only to fall in love with the chosen fiancĂ©e. It stars Imran Khan, Katrina Kaif and Ali Zafar.
The brainchild of company founder Nazima Uppal, former resident and 1995 Bellerose High grad, My Brother’s Bride is the start of what could be a series of Asian films screened in our suburb.
“I grew up here. I have a warm, comforting feeling about this place and working with Grandin was a complete joy,” says Uppal.
Rated as PG, the two-hour plus movie is filmed in Hindi with English subtitles and will have a short intermission in the East Indian tradition.

Last Saturday, the 38th annual Alberta Film and Television Award recipients for the prestigious Rosie were announced. Of particular interest to the St. Albert and Sturgeon County area were three winners.
Blackstone, the APTN television series that spells out aboriginal issues on the reserve like it is, scored three statuettes. Producers Ron E. Scott and Jesse Szymanski, who filmed the first two series at Namao, received a nod for best production reflecting cultural diversity.
Scott also went on to receive the Best Screenwriter award and Michelle Thrush was recognized with best performance by an Alberta actress for her portrayal of Gail Stoney, a former alcoholic who is still facing inner demons.
Caution: May Contain Nuts, a Mosaic Entertainment project, also received three accolades all in the craft categories. St. Albert’s Myron Hyrak won for best production designer/art director. Under the deft hand of Nuts producer Camille Beaudoin, a former Ă©cole Secondaire St. Marguerite d’Youville student, the comedy sketch series won best editor and best makeup awards.
And finally St. Albert’s own producers Jaro Malanowski and & Erin Stevenson of Avatar Media were presented with best digital program or project for Health Warriors Network.
The Varscona is hosting its fifth annual Crystal Ball on Saturday, May 19. As well as being a fundraiser for the Varscona, Teatro Quindicina and Shadow Theatre, organizers will unveil plans for Varscona’s renovations.
The gaggle of Edmonton’s favourite musical performers hitting the stage for a few well-paced numbers include Sherri Sommerville, Andrea House, Kristi Hansen, Amber Bissonnette and Shannon Blanchet.
