The 1965 film attracted several generations and millions of devotees with the story about Maria, a young novice nun hired to govern the seven children of a widowed naval officer.

Based loosely on the 1930s real-life von Trapp family, who escaped from Nazi occupation in Austria, it includes the renowned music and lyrics of Rodgers and Hammerstein from the original 1959 Broadway production.

Starring in this extravaganza of 32 actors is Josée Boudreau, Réjean Cournoyer, Susan Gilmour and Susan Henley.

The children’s chorus includes four St. Albert singers – Grace Bokenfohr, Claire Meeker, Connor Meeker and Frances Mulder. St. Albert country singer Nathan Carroll also makes his Citadel debut in this production and St. Albert Children’s Theatre designer Marissa Kochanski is the assistant set and costume designer.

Tickets are available through the Citadel Box office at 780-425-1820 or at www.citadelthreatre.com.

Get ready. The name of this next play is l-o-n-g. Meet The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society Murder Mystery.

In this play within a play, join the ladies of the Farndale Dramatic Society as they present a drawing room comedy titled Mystery at Checkmate Manor.

The setting is of course, Checkmate Manor, the home of the now deceased Lord Bishop. The plot thickens as family members gather for the reading of the will – but is another death in the cards?

The mystery adds another layer as the ambitious troupe avoids one disaster after another – collapsing scenery, missed cues and forgotten lines.

Edmonton’s Ad Hoc Theatre first presented this production at 14 Karat Fringe where it received a five karat rating, earned a nod as a pick-of-the-Fringe and was also a Fringe holdover.

The show runs April 26 to 28 at Catalyst Theatre, 8529 Gateway Blvd. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20. Call Tix on the Square at 780-420-1757.
