Alberta Ballet celebrates its 48th season with The Three Musketeers at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium this Friday and Saturday.

This is the first time David Nixon’s large scale literary classic adapted from Alexandre Dumas’ longstanding adventure has been performed in Edmonton.

This action-packed ballet of France’s greatest swordsmen is packed with impressive sword fights, swashbuckling comedy, stunning choreography and beautiful romantic duets.

This majestic adaptation follows in the company’s footsteps of the chivalric Don Quixote, a dazzling Spanish-themed extravaganza challenging old-fashioned goodness in times of fluctuating change.

“We are so excited to premiere a work by celebrated Canadian choreographer David Nixon. Mr. Nixon is one of Europe’s most acclaimed artistic directors and his bodies of work should be performed more often in his homeland,” said Jean Grand-MaĂ®tre, artistic director of Alberta Ballet.

Tickets start at $29. Call 780-428-6839 or online at ticket.albertaballet.com.

The University of Alberta drama student company, popularly known around campus as ABBEDAM Productions, has lined up Orestes 2.0 as its 21st production.

American playwright Charles Mee’s adaptation of Euripides’ definitive tale, running Nov. 12 to 16, likewise deals with fate, family, politics and moral obligations.

Mee’s remake has been updated to reflect our current political climate and numerous references are borrowed from popular sources such as William S. Burroughs and Vogue Magazine.

There is a preview on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 7:30 and two matinee performances Nov. 15 and 16 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $10 ($5 for preview) for students and seniors and $15 ($10 for preview) for adults. Orestes 2.0 plays out at the Second Playing Space at the Timms Centre, 87 Ave. and 112 St. For tickets call 780-420-1757 or go online to tixonthesquare.ca
