Members of the Citadel Theatre’s Young Acting Company and the Young Musical Company are set to unveil two productions, the results of a year’s work.
Television personality, singer and actress Bridget Ryan directs Leonard Bernstein’s Wonderful Town. In this Tony Award-winning musical, two sisters arrive in New York from Ohio in the 1930s and find frustration, career hopes and romance in the city that never sleeps.
Director Dave Horak directs The Inspector General, originally written by Russian playwright Nikolai Gogol and adapted by Michael Chemers. It is a farcical drama that mercilessly lampoons corrupt government officials in an obscure town.
St. Albert’s Alexandra Dawkins (communications director), Marie Mavko (city controller) and Hayley Moorehouse (city solicitor/police chife) are cast in The Inspector General.
“It’s bouncy, larger-than-life. It’s very cartoonish, but the matter is serious. It’s very political, exaggerated and over the top,” said Moorehouse.
“It’s a satirical jab at corruption and the inability of politicians to make a difference.”
The Inspector General runs May 29 and 30 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, May 31 at 1:30 p.m. Wonderful Town is on May 31 and June 1 at 7:30 p.m. with a Sunday matinee at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $25. Call 780-425-1820 or online at citadeltheatre.com.
Teatro la Quindicina springs into action with Stewart Lemoine’s captivating 1930’s comedy The Jazz Mother.
Last produced in 1991 at the Phoenix Theatre, the play is put under a fresh spotlight by a vivacious new cast during a two-week run that starts Thursday, May 29.
Life in a quiet boarding house in Badger’s Bluff, Iowa turns raucous when a different kind of vocalist moves in lugging a bassinet and a stand-up microphone. Jocelyn Ahlf is the provocative songstress Bobbie Romayne, Matt Busby is Tomas Tjubb, an addled but accommodating Polish landlord and Kristi Hansen is Enid Dunbar, nurse with a past.
Everyone sings and eats while the secrets start flying fast and furious.
Performances are at Varscona Theatre on Tuesday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with matinees on Saturdays at 2 p.m.
