There is a monster in all of us. It can be ugly or frightening. Or perhaps inhumanly cruel or wicked. Whatever character this creature takes on, it tends toward the excess.
Maggie Tree, Edmonton’s go-to theatre for exploring women’s stories, is partnering with their Calgary sister company, Urban Curvz Theatre, to present Monstrosities.
Running April 17 to 26 at the Varscona Theatre, the play looks at what it means to be thought of as a monster in our society. It’s a tense 85-minute tale of three women who deal with a freak living below the surface.
Maggie Tree has assembled some of the most prominent actors around including Amber Borotsik, Jill Connell, Kristi Hansen and St. Albert Children’s Theatre alumna Vanessa Sabourin.

For its next foray onto the stage, Two One-Way Tickets to Broadway presents The Drowsy Chaperone running April 18 to 27 at La Cité Francophone.
Bob Martin and Don McKellar poke fun at the musical theatre genre with a gentle loving touch. They take the most artificial of genres with a sudden break into song and dance, unrealistic plot twists and celebrate it as an escape.
In this romantic comedy, an old man comments on the music of the 1920s from the perspective of the 21st century fan. It was an era of mistaken identities, misunderstandings and catchy song and dance numbers.
In the plot a Broadway star tries to give up the stage for love. To save the show, her producer sabotages her wedding. Two gangsters dressed as pastry chefs are after him and the cast features a Latino lothario, a ditzy chorus girl and a confused best man to name a few.
Directed and choreographed by Barbara Mah, this cast of 16 also features St. Albert Children’s Theatre alumna Veronica Masik.
