A David Ives’ Tony-nominated play launches the Citadel Theatre winter season.
Venus in Fur looks at a New York writer-director who mounts a play based on the 19th century erotic novel Venus in Fur.
Unable to find the right leading lady, director Thomas Novachek is about to call it a day when a new actress appears at his door. At first he dismisses Vanda Jordan. She is needy, crude, compliant and desperate.
Surprisingly Vanda manages to convince Thomas to give her a read through. As the reading makes progress, Vanda begins to exert dominance over the director and the balance of power shifts.
Director James MacDonald (Clybourne Park) exerts his own brand of influence through the “sexy tango” between University of Alberta BFA actors Alana Hawley (The Three Musketeers) and Jamie Cavanagh (Romeo and Juliet).
Preview shows start tonight. The official opening is Thursday, Jan. 22 and the production runs until Feb. 8.
Tickets start at $30. Call 780-425-1820 or online at citadeltheatre.com.
It isn’t often a singer walks into a bar, joins a jam and later a recording producer walks up and says, “How do you feel about recording with me?”
That happened to Don Gammie over a year ago after the country artist went to LB’s Pub to check out an open jam. Since then, he’s recorded an EP, joined a band and has come full circle.
Tonight Gammie and Blackwater Crude are bringing their best to LB’s for another night of rockin’ country. Rounding out the band is Ray Blackmore (bass), Travis Thornton (lead guitar) and Graham Mellway (drums).
Don Gammie and Blackwater Crude start at 9:30 p.m. There is no cover.
