Edmonton chemist and animator John Osborne teams up with the innovative Boreal Electro-Acoustic Music Society (BEAMS) Orchestra for an exciting evening of animated films and music manipulation at the Garneau Theatre.
Since he began experimenting with abstract imagery in the late 1960s, Osborne has developed a reputation for scratch imagery and experimented with evolving algorithms to generate patterns and abstract images.
He pairs up with BEAMS musicians Don Ross (clarinet), Allison Balcetis (sax), John Armstrong (theremin), Wilf Kozub (synths) and Cam Neufeld, violinist for St. Albert’s own Back Porch Swing.
The five musicians will create an improvised soundscape of oscillating electric currents to match the moods of a dozen short films. Osborne’s hallucinogenic imagery runs from the representational to the abstract.
Metro Cinema is hosting the event at Garneau Theatres, 8712 – 109 Street on Tuesday, January 14 at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 adults, $8 students/seniors and children under 16 are free.

It is a rare day to see Brian Webb’s contemporary dance company to team up with the neoclassical ballet forms of Alberta Ballet.
But in celebration of a new year, the two companies pair up for Up Close at the University of Alberta’s Timms Centre on Jan. 17 and 18.
Up Close showcases the cutting edge choreography of Alberta Ballet’s leading choreographers Yukichi Hattori and Alex Ballard.
The all-male cast of the world premiere of Hattori’s Temple, highlights simple movements and the disciplined routine needed to build art and body.
Ballard, now in his third year as Ballet Master at Alberta Ballet, mounts the Edmonton premiere of ruin-time, a duet with Reilley Bell and Kelley McKinlay. It explores the way elements wear down and transform into something treasured.
In the evening’s second world-premiere, Ballard also introduces The Precise Nature of Catastrophe, with another all-male cast that reflects on the chaos stemming from love and loss.
Tickets are $35 general admission and $25 students/seniors. Call 780-420-1757 or online at www.tixonthesquare.ca
