Switch off the Christmas carols and hop onto the roots train for a ride to Mark Ammar’s Open Stage this Tuesday at LB’s Pub.
Ammar’s special guests this week are two members of Prairie Dog – John Whittington (guitar, vocals) and Elaine Somerfield (keyboard, vocals) along with the independent George Hauser (bass, vocals).
Steeped in country and rock influences, these music biz veterans have developed a flair that encompasses many styles of music.
Hauser, who was driven to play since he first heard music, has played live concerts, television gigs and had recording contracts.
“George has played with Kinlock, Al Cherney, Laura Vinson and Red Wyng, Ronnie Prophet, the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra, Beachnicks and Darcy West,” says Ammar.
On the other hand Whittington, who has appeared with Off Ramp and Bad Habitz, was strongly influenced by an American music catalogue that includes The Allman Brothers, Crosbie, Stills, Nash and Young and James Taylor.
A dynamic and accomplished musician, Whittington first met Somerfield, a MacEwan University graduate in 1995, when she first joined the band Off Ramp as a keyboard player.
“Elaine is a multi-instrumentalist who also plays saxophone and flute and is renowned for her vocal harmonies.”
The open jam starts at 9 p.m. No cover.
St. Albert’s Barbara Leah Meyers once again hits the club circuit with a special engagement of vocal jazz and Christmas swing at Jeffrey’s CafĂ© and Wine Bar on Friday, Dec. 9.
