There are a couple new faces at Ammar’s Tuesday Night Open Stage and they come with the names of Bill Dowey and Richard Kovaleski.
They will join veteran guitarist and vocalist Paul Finn, a regular face at the Tuesday jams who has patrolled Canada’s highways and has pulled together a fresh line-up for blues fans.
Dowey and Kovaleski, two boys from the Calgary area, are a major force in keeping blues alive in Cowtown.
Dowey’s powerful vocals and smooth slide guitar have impressed fans, and over the decades he’s developed a gritty style that has earned him a respected place in the blues lineage.
He’s fronted the Hoodoo Sons for five years and now leads the Blues Devils. However, he’s practically made a career of backing some of the greats such as Albert Collins, Fenton Robinson, Sonny Rhodes, Roy Gaines and Dutch Mason.
And he’s filled opening slots for a grocery list of names that includes Jethro Tull, John Hammond, the Neville Brothers, Jeff Healey and Colin James.
Kovaleski instead is a bass player who sits in with Dowey. He emigrated from Poland and learned his bass guitar chops backing artists as part of Calgary’s King Edward’s house band.
Dowey, Kovaleski and Finn perform this coming Tuesday at LB’s Pub at 9 p.m. No cover.
Guys in Disguise and Workshop West once again pair up to blaze a trail for queer arts and culture.
