Since Grease, the 1971 musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, lit up the stage focusing on the 1950s working class youth subculture, it’s been a favourite among high schools. And with good reason.

Since Grease, the 1971 musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, lit up the stage focusing on the 1950s working class youth subculture, it’s been a favourite among high schools.

And with good reason. The musical tackles social issues such as teenage pregnancy and gang violence with running themes of love, friendship, rebellion and sexual exploration.

Taking a fresh approach to Grease, Paul Kane High mounts their version at the Arden Theatre from January 7 to 10 at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $15 and are available at the Paul Kane High office by calling 780-459-4405.

The Alberta Avenue Deep Freeze Festival has always been a success, in large part due to a solid volunteer core of about 300 people.

However, artistic director Christy Morin just announced that the festival still needs 100 volunteers in a variety of positions.

The list is pretty extensive: decorating Christmas trees; working with ice carvers; serving food indoors and outdoors; attendants for ice slides, face painting and the skating rink; street hockey referees; ushers for the igloo tent; site grooming, sugar shack assistants; park and ride attendants and information booth attendants.

“If people are worried about the cold, we provide mitten and boot warmers,” said Morin.

This year the festival is on Jan. 10 and 11. There are three ways to volunteer. Go online to www.deepfreezefest.ca/volunteer/ or by email at [email protected] or by calling 780-471-1580.

“We really need people to shake out the slumber of Christmas and get out into the new year.”
