A show of business excellence

Edmonton Events has recognized Prairie Gardens and Adventure Farms for its business savvy and its impact on the capital region and beyond.

Prairie Gardens, in collaboration with RGE RD Restaurant, received two awards as Best Venue and Best in Innovation for culinary frontiers. The Edmonton Events Gala was held on Feb. 25 at the Royal Alberta Museum.

For the past four years Prairie Gardens and chef Blair Lebsack of RGE RD Restaurant have hosted highly successful Field to Fork long table gourmet dinners at the 35-acre Bon Accord farm.

“We were surprised especially since we weren’t expecting it. We’ve been working at this for quite a while. We often work in groups and people love our Field to Fork dinners. In just the last season 500 people dined here. We’re thrilled word has gotten out that this is a great place to come,” said Prairie Gardens' owner Tam Andersen.

And as an afterthought she added, “And we were thrilled to have our name called.”

This season, in addition to the regular long table dinners, Andersen is adding Fire Roasters Long Table Dinners, a series of gourmet meals cooked exclusively on an infiernillo. The Argentinean grill is positioned over a wood fire that allows for intense smoky flavours and very high heat.

Culinary competition to build new Team Canada

Are you a master chef or cook? Then the Canadian Food Championships invites you to put your knife skills to the test.

Once again the Canadian Food Championships will be added to the wildly popular Taste of Edmonton events roster. The competition takes place from July 22 to 24.

More than $50,000 is up for grabs. Winners receive a golden ticket to represent Team Canada at the World Food Championships in the United States along with a $1,500 travel voucher and $2,500 in cash.

Organizers are looking for chefs and cooks of any skill level over the age of 16 to compete. Entrants must be Canadian citizens and pay a $100 fee for each category they participate in.

Six categories are included: bacon, burger, dessert, sandwich, seafood and steak.

At the 2015 inaugural Canadian championships, Rusty Johnson of Port Moody, B.C. carried his title to the worlds, winning first place in the burger category, and Wayne Shymko from Winnipeg won top prize for his awesome chili. Both men received $10,000 in cash.

Organizers are taking applications for competitors, judges and volunteers. Competition applications are available at canadianfoodchampionships.ca.
