The MusĂ©e HĂ©ritage Museum paraphrased Pat Benatar and summoned the city’s younger Ansel Adams and future National Geographic contributors when it announced the start of its fifth annual Take Your Best Shot contest earlier this summer.

The contest encourages students from Grade 3 all the way to Grade 12 to snap their best pics. The best of the best will be chosen by a panel of judges for a special exhibit that is set to be on display for a two-month run starting Nov. 24.

Curator Joanne White said that it’s one of the most popular features on the museum’s calendar time in and time out. This year, the Nature theme will be a repeat of one from the contest’s early days.

“Nature worked really well the last time we did it. It’s been a little while so we’re doing it again.”

The deadline for submissions is Oct. 13. Entries will be divided into three groups: grades 3 to 6, grades 7 to 9, and grades 10 to 12.

A panel of judges will decide the winners. Prizes will be awarded to the top three photos in each age group but the jury will choose 12 entries from each age group for the exhibit. Entries will be judged on each photographer’s choice of subject, creativity, quality of photo, and written description. Winners will be notified by Oct. 30.

The selected photographs will also be available for viewing on the museum’s website.

While the contest is only for students in Grade 3 and up, there is something special going on for those even younger than that. Up-and-coming photographers in Grade 2 and under get their own special display in the Discover Room. Photos for this special display can be submitted to [email protected].
